KORAN FOOTNOTES
2:193 (or 2:189):- … Fight the unbelievers until no other religion except Islam is left.  [[OPPONENTS DEFINED: Let us examine how Islam defines "UNBELIEVER/S" and "DISBELIEVER/S," and also look at the words "INFIDEL/S," "POLYTHEISTS," "IDOLATORS," "PAGANS," "KUFAR," "KAFIR," AND "HYPOCRITES."   Also check "THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK," and "THE PEOPLE TO WHOM THE SCRIPTURES HAVE BEEN GIVEN," "JEWS," and "CHRISTIANS."
Many Muslim teachers say that "INFIDEL" means a person who does not believe in Allah.  But the Koran 12:106 states: "The majority of those who believe in Allah do not do so without committing idol worship."  So most Muslims can believe, or perhaps ought to believe, that more than half of their fellow-Muslims are, inwardly, idolators !!!
The JEWS, among other insults in the Koran, are apes, despised and rejected (Koran 2:65 and 5:60), and like a donkey laden with books (62:5).  They are included with People of the Book, some of whom have been transformed into apes and swine.  The Judaists' land belongs to the Muslims (Koran 33:27, and see 59:2).
Koran 9:29 gives an order to make war on those to whom the Scriptures have been given (which means JEWS and CHRISTIANS), to humble them and make them pay tribute (another definition might be servitude or dhimmitude.).  The Jews and Christians receive the curse "May Allah destroy them!" (Koran 9:30).  Christians who believe the Trinity dogma are included as Infidels by Koran 5:73 and 6:106, and those who believe Jesus was God by 5:72, Son of God by 6:101 and 72:2-3, or Lord by 9:31.
Some of the PEOPLE OF THE BOOK have been transformed into apes and swine, says Koran 5:60.  The Prophet is ordered, Koran 66:9 says, to make war on the Infidels (non-Muslims; re-read the above to note how wide the definition becomes) and the Hypocrites.
HYPOCRITES are to be attacked and killed, says Koran 4:89, and the Muslims are urged to be unyielding to them (9:73).  The Hypocrites, Koran 2:8 explains, are people who say they believe, but inwardly do not believe.
Doesn't this mean, they are outwardly Muslims, but are judged by other Muslims as not truly Muslims ?  Hypocrites are NOT to be obeyed (Koran 33:1 and 33:48).  Because each Muslim has the ability to decide who is a Hypocrite and who is not, could this explain why Muslims in Muslim and non-Muslim lands find it hard to co-operate with governments, rulers and general society ?  In short, why there is a rebellious attitude by some or many of them ?  Just as in non-Islamic societies, the murder and/or overthrow of kings and other rulers has occurred right through Islamic lands, an early example being the defeat and killing of Ali (cousin, son-in-law, and successor of Muhammed as leader, i.e., caliph) in 661 C.E., i.e., A.D.
Muslims must not befriend those who oppose Allah and his Apostle, even if they are their (own) fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kinsfolk (Koran 58:22). (The Australian Family Association ought to read that scripture !)
PAGANS: A Hadith tradition says that Umar sent the Muslims to the great countries to fight the pagans (Bukhari's Hadith 4, 53:386).  Another tradition in Sahih Bukhari's, 5, 59:600 says, "There is no migration, but Jihad (for Allah's Cause)."
No wonder the early history of Islam includes a story that a non-Muslim leader begged his fellow-citizens not to make an alliance with the Muslims, because it would mean agreeing to fight the whole world !  Also read Koran doctrine 71:26-27 (or 71:27-28), and return to Koran 2:193 (or 2:189).]]
3:35-36 (or 3:31-32):- Remember when the wife of Imran said, … I have brought forth a female … and I have named her Mary. … Zacharias reared her.  [[Imran is Amran, who in Hebrew scripture (the Old Testament), Numbers 26:59 and Exodus 6:20, is named as the father of Aaron, Moses, and Miriam.  They lived an estimated 1500 years before Mary and Jesus!  See also note on 19:27-34.  Zacharias (Zachary, Zechariah) is named as Mary's father, not just someone who reared her, in the Christian Greek Scriptures, i.e., the New Testament, Luke 1:5.]]
3:46 (or 3:41):- And He shall speak to men alike when in the cradle and when grown up; … [[See footnote for 5:110.]]
4:12 continued (or 4:14):- … And your wives shall have a fourth part of what ye leave, … an eighth part … [[Is this fair and just ?  Remembering that there can be up to four wives plus ex-wives, and re-reading the earlier part of 4:12, ask yourself is this fair.  Then re-read 2:240 which seems to say that a dead man's estate shall give the wives a year's maintenance without causing them to quit their homes.  At the end of that year, who takes over their homes ?  If you guess a male relation of the husband, you might be close to being right !
Re-read the previous verse, Koran 4:11, for a dead man's daughters getting only half shares, then check how much of Muhammed's land after his death (no son survived) was received by his daughter Fatima, according to a tradition, at: Bukhari's 8, 80:718.]]
4:15 (or 4:14, or 4:19):- If any of your women be guilty of whoredom, … shut them up in their houses till death release them, or Allah make some way for them.  [["Adultery, fornication": Well, this aya (verse) orders the sex-offending women to be shut up until death, while 24:2 orders men and women a hundred stripes, and yet again 24:3 limits their marriage partners.  Contradictions ?  Re-read 4:82 saying that the Koran has many contradictions.
AND, those who read the Hadith traditions find that Bukhari's Hadith tradition 8, 82:815 reports that Mhd ordered the son of Unias to be whipped and exiled, and the woman to be stoned to death.
A more even punishment is reported in Malik's Muwatta 41:41.1.1, Mhd ordering a Jewish pair to be both stoned to death, following Hebrew scripture.  Sunan Abu-Dawud's 38:4405 reports that Mhd ordered a man who had illegal sexual intercourse with a slave-girl to be stoned to death.  In spite of these contradictions, Shariah Law, supposedly the Muslim scholars' rules based on the Koran and the life of Mhd, seems to demand stoning to death, and in modern times female rape victims are being stoned to death for what the Islamic courts say is "fornication or adultery."
So, the Koran 24:3 limiting the marriage partners of the adulterers and the idolaters is really a dead letter.  Islamic dogma is that they must be killed.]]
4:43 (or 4:46) … Approach not prayers … until after washing your whole body.  If … ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. … [["Unclean, purify."  Unclean to be in contact with women, as if one had been attending to body wastes, in this aya (verse), and unclean before prayers to touch women, according to Koran 5:6 !  Try to guess from what culture such ideas were transmitted.  Also remember, there are supposed to be five prayers every day.]]
5:32 (or 5:35):  If any one slew a person ….  [[Note that this aya, supposedly forbidding murder, is of a command supposedly addressed to the children of Israel, in the past, not to the Muslims of Mahomet's time or later.  This is a favourite quotation of Muslim apologists and their dupes, trying to make out that Islam, the religion of giving in (submission) through compulsion (holy war) or otherwise, is a religion of peace.  But quietly read the "compulsion" aya at 3:83 (or 3:77), the terror and beheading aya 8:12, and several others.]]
5:33 (or 5:37):- The punishment … murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides[["Hands and feet:" President George W. Bush was ignorant of this, or spoke as if he were ignorant.  After the United States, Britain, and Australia took over Iraq, some time later a U.S. agent banned a militant Iraqi Islamic cleric's newspaper, this was followed by an upswelling of resistance to the liberation / occupation forces.  An early outrage was the mutiliation of bodies of about two United States troops.
Bush was so "politically correct" that he said that Islam banned body mutilation, and he said this was not an Islamic act.  This shows the ignorance and foolishness of Bush II and his advisers, because even if they did not know of this scripture 5:33, or of 8:12 ordering the striking off of heads and fingertips, they ought to have known that beheading was common in Islamic jurisprudence (see also 47:4), and have heard of the hands of thieves being struck off in obedience to Koran 5:38.  (Incidentally, "Exiled from the land" is "imprisoned" in another translation.)]]
5:38 (or 5:42):- And (as for) the man who steals and the woman who steals, cut off their hands [[Ask yourself, how can a thief turn over a new leaf and earn an honest living in Muslim-type economies with one (or after a second offence, both) of his/her hands removed?  Beside the difficulty of doing many jobs, nearly every person who met him/her would mistrust him/her.]]
5:110 (or 5:109-110:- When He shall say:  O Jesus! Son of Mary! call to mind my favour upon thee and upon thy mother, and when I strengthened thee with the Holy Spirit that thou shouldest speak to men alike in the cradle and when grown up; – {110}  And when I taught thee the Scripture, and Wisdom, and the Evangel:  and thou didst create of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by my leave, and didst breathe into it, and by my leave it became a bird;[[Re the baby Jesus supposedly speaking in the cradle (3:41, 5:110, and 19:27-34), compare with early Christian era apocryphal (that is, rejected) book 1 Infancy 1:2-3.  Re the child Jesus and the clay bird being given life, compare with similar apocryphal book 2 Infancy 1:4-9 (Thomas's Gospel).]]
5:116:- And when Allah shall say– 'O Jesus, son of Mary:  hast thou said unto mankind – "Take me and my mother as two Gods, beside God"?'  He shall say – …   [[This unusual statement about the supposed gods Mary and Jesus seems to have roots in a reported Egyptian Christian variant teaching around 325 C.E..  The overwhelming majority of Christian sects teach that God is one, but the one God comprises a trinity of three persons – the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.  Nearly all Christians do NOT teach that Mary is God, part of God, or a god.  However, according to a book called Nimrod, a Melchite section of Christians from Egypt, in A.D. 325 at the Nicene Council of Christians, argued that the three persons in the Trinity were "the Father, the Virgin Mary, and (the) Messiah their Son."  (This is as quoted by Rev. Alexander Hislop, 1858, in The Two Babylons, A & B Publishers Group, Brooklyn, ISBN 1-881316-36-x, p 82 and varied at p 89.)  The Council rejected that teaching.  So, possibly news of the different though rejected teaching that Mary as well as Jesus were part of the Godhead had evidently reached some ears or eyes in Arabia while the Koran was being devised, and seems to have been transmuted into Mohammedans teaching that Christians were honouring both Mary and Jesus as gods.]]
9:30:- And the Jews say: Uzair [Ezra] is the son of Allah … [[In the light of the amazing claim in Hislop's book that some Christians around A.D. 325 taught that Mary was part of the Trinity, the Webmaster would, after finding that out, not be surprised at anything !  He would appreciate it if any document or custom of the Judaists or Israelites in any age could be produced to support this statement.  It had been the Webmaster's belief that Yehovah / Yahweh / Jehovah of Israel and Judah was not described as the begetter of any particular person, or of Israel-Judah, although he was figuratively "father" to them and to his followers in general as a theological metaphor (Ho 11:1; Ex 4:22; Dt 1:31, 8:5; Is 43:6; Ps 103:13; Je 3:19; 31:0, 20; Ho 2:1).]]
17:1:- Sūrat Bani Isrāīl, or Al-Isrā, also called "The Children of Israel," or "The Night Journey":  [[Sūrat 17 opens with the night journey of the Holy Prophet:  It is understood to mean that he was transported from the Sacred Mosque of Mecca (Makkah), Arabia, to the Farthest Mosque of Jerusalem, Palestine, in a night, and was also shown some of the Signs of Allah.  (Adapted from discussion in Arabian Koran, p 772, which also states that the Hadith literature gives details of this journey.)]]
18:50:- "… We said to the angels … they prostrated except Iblīs.  He was one of the Jinns.  [[In 38:71-74 Iblis / Eblis is said to be an angel.  Yet in 18:50 the writer has him down as both an angel and a jinn / djinn, which has all the earmarks of a contradiction.
The angels, the Koran says, were messengers, made with two, three or four pairs of wings (Koran 35:1).  However, the Hadith tradition includes that "Muhammad had seen Gabriel with six hundred wings." (Bukhari's Hadith 6, 60:380, and see 379.)
Seeing that, according to most Mohammedans, all worship ought to go to Allah and to Him alone, is it logical for Allah to tell the angels and/or jinns to prostrate to Adam ?
According to the Koran, besides being messengers, angels' other duties included to tear out the souls of the wicked (79:1), protect humans (82:10) and record their actions (82:11).  The angel Gabriel supposedly dictated the Koran to Muhammed.
BUT, what was Allah's aim in having the angels prostrating to Adam, pray ?  Is it right that intelligent beings, whether visible or invisble, should bow down to the first human ?  It's all very strange.
Jinns, the Koran says, were made from "the fire of a scorching wind" (15:26-27) or from "fire free of smoke" (5:15).  According to a tradition in the Hadith, bones and animal dung are the food of jinns (Bukhari's Volume 5, Book 58, Number 200).
Later, man was made from "clay" (6:2; 15:26; 38:71; 55:14), or "water" (25:54), or "a quintessence" (23:12).  These statements seem to be contradictory.
The main point of this note is that it is unlikely that Iblis (or Eblis) was, at the same time, both an angel and a jinn.]]
19:27-34 or 19:28-35:- Then came she with the babe … They said, 'O Mary! … O sister of Aaron!  … And she made a sign to them, pointing towards the babe.  They said, 'How shall we speak with him who is in the cradle, an infant?'  It said, 'Verily, I am the servant of Allah; He hath given me the Book, and He hath made me a prophet; …'  [[Regarding Mary being supposedly the sister of Aaron (who supposedly lived approximately 1500 years earlier, and was the brother of Moses), the confusion could be because of the Arabs' lack of literacy in any language including Arabic until shortly before Mohammed's time, and thus many of the non-Judaist and non-Christian dwellers in Arabia had little or no understanding of the huge time-spans of history.  The names Miriam (Moses's sister) and Mary (mother of Jesus) are the same in Arabic (Maryam).
Regarding the baby Jesus supposedly speaking in the cradle, see note on 5:110.]]
22:19 (or 22:20):- … But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them; … [[This would seem to give scriptural approval to bombing people, such as the attacks on United States soldiers on overseas peace missions a few years ago, the 9/11 attacks on the two New York towers, the Pentagon (and the White House a target ?), the London underground rail and the bus, the Madrid bombings, and the two Bali bombings.  There is a rash of suicide and other bombings going on around the Muslim world, killing innocent people.  The dupes of the extremists might believe that the supposed disbelievers belong to a different Muslim sect ("hypocrites" is a term used to describe them, whether Sunni, Shiite, Hazari, Dervish, or any of the other sects), or are People of the Book or people to whom the Scriptures have been given, defined as Jews and Christians, idol-worshippers such as Hindus, or disbelievers such as the Buddhists, atheists, and others.]]
24:31: And speak to the believing women … that they throw their veils over their bosoms, … [[Re veils.  Read also Koran 33:55 and 33:59, and see Hadith tradition, Sahih Bukhari's Volume 6, Book 60, Number 10.  In the U.S.C. internet republishing of an English translation of the Hadith tradition Bukhari 8, 74:257 the words, in brackets "(Al-Hijab; a complete body cover excluding the eyes)" seem to be a man-made addition to the old text.  The suppression of women lives on !]]
24:33 (or 24:34):- … You shall not force your slave-girls into prostitution … forgiving and merciful to them.  [[Guilt-shifting: Notice how the guilt has shifted to the slave-girls, victims of greedy owners and lustful men (presumably), but Allah will forgive the females !  The slave-owner does not get blamed in this aya (verse), nor seem to need forgiveness and mercy.  Is it any wonder that rape victims are still being stoned to death in 2011, when such perverted illogical logic is at the root of the culture ?
Slavery itself seems quite acceptable in the Koran scripture and the Hadith traditions (just as it is in the Greek Christian scriptures, and the Hebrew-Aramaic scriptures).  But the apologists will be able to quote the start of aya 33, which tells slave-owners to be willing to allow slaves to buy their way out of slavery !
The Saudi Arabian version of the Yusuf Ali translation struggles in footnotes to overcome the lack of a Koran condemnation of slavery by such words as "obsolete" (footnote 2991), "where slavery was legal" and "absolutely condemned" (fn 2992), and "despicable trade" (fn 2992).  But the footnote writers still think the "poor unfortunate girls" need to "find mercy from Allah." (fn 2994).  Refer to pages 1014-15.
(This is guilt-shifting at the same level as the European pre-history ancients and the Amerindians who sacrificed human victims to win favour from the gods, and the Mediaeval and later Christians with their heresy hunts and witch trials, usually ending in burnings.)  Research the Hadith / Hadeeth traditions, where slaves make regular appearances, starting with <hadith.htm#slaves> and Bukhari's collection, Volume 8, Book 80, Number 741.  Slavery in 2011 is still practised in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, etc.]]
27:37: [[This was supposed to be King Solomon speaking about Saba, or Sheba, before its queen visited him.  Send any evidence of such remarks to the Webmaster, please.]]
40:36 (or 40:38):- [[Haman, the favourite of Persian king Ahasuerus (485-465 B.C.) and the enemy of the Judaists, in this āya becomes a high official of Pharaoh, ruler of Egypt around 1280 B.C.  See Haman similarly "out of his time" at 28:5 (or 28:8), 29:38 (or 29:39), and 40:25 (or 40:24).]]
41:34-35:- Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal.  Repel (Evil) with what is better: …   [[ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Below is the extract of the two verses that Alston, cartoonist, inserted in his cartoon after the reported surprise and death of Osama Bin Laden, in The West Australian, page 20, Tuesday, May 3, 2011:

]]
64:14:- O ye who believe!  Verily, in your wives and your children ye have an enemy:  wherefore beware of them. … [["Honour killings:"  This seemingly gives backing to the practice of the so-called "honour" killings of wives and daughters that occur in Muslim families, both in Muslim and non-Muslim lands.  If one's own family members are an "enemy," some Muslims might believe they ought not to slacken in following them as 4:104 orders, to strike terror into them as Koran 8:60 orders, and not to take them as friends (Koran 60:1).  A woman who is suspected of refractoriness may be scourged, says Koran 4:34.  A man's children and worldly goods are but a temptation, according to the Koran 8:28.
Daughters inherit half of what sons get, says Koran 4:11.  But Muhammad's daughter Fatima did not get ownership of her father's land from the men who took over after her father's death, according to the Hadith tradition Bukhari's 8, 80:718.  For another example of the Koran scripture teachings regarding family relations, read the curse on Mohammed's own uncle Abu Lahab and aunt at 111:1-5, and the relevant footnotes. Perhaps the Australian Family Association ought to take note !]]
65:4 [[Child marriage]]:- If you are in doubt concerning those of your wives who have ceased menstruating, know that their waiting period shall be three months.  The same shall apply to those who have not yet menstruated.  [[To back what seems in this verse to be marriage of an immature girl, called "child marriage" in Western societies in modiern times, having sex with a 9-year-old girl, ‘Aisha, is reported in the Bukhari Hadith tradition at Bukhari's 5, 58:236.]]
66:2:- Allah hath allowed you release from your oaths.[[It would seem that the deceit teaching of taqiyya is supported by this Koran scripture, and by tradition in Bukhari's Hadith 7, 67:427 <http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/bukhari/067.sbt.html#007.067.427>.

98:4:- Neither were they to whom the Scriptures were given divided into sects, till after this clear evidence had reached them.  [[(The word "this" seems to be an addition.)  Long before Mohammed was born, Judaism/Israel had divided into sects, including Samaritans (a kind of continuation of the old "Israel", that is, the northern kingdom), Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, and Karaites.  In modern times there are also major and minor sects, and a tiny number of Samaritans continue their tradition.  Most modern Judaists follow the Babylonian Talmud's teachings though there is a Jerusalem Talmud as well from ancient times.  In modern times Jews have many different standards of practices, from extremists and tiny sects right through standard conformists to very relaxed and then through to non-practising yet loyal, on to people who wish they weren't.
Of course, the whole verse contradicts the other Muslim teaching that people like Abraham and Jesus were following Allah's teaching, which Muslims would say was the same "clear evidence" that Mahomet was then providing.]]
111:1-5:- Let the hands of ABU LAHAB perish, and let himself perish!…   [[It was his own flesh and blood, his uncle, who rejected the new faith, and a curse was also put on his aunt.  In the light of this and other Islamic curses, it seems hypocritical to head all but one of the Koran's surahs with "In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful," as some translations word it.  Study this hatred alongside the Koran scripture 64:14 that the wives and children are an enemy, to beware.]]
SOURCES CONSULTED: The Holy Qur'an, translated by M.H.Shakir, 1983, publisher: Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Inc., New York , <www.hti. umich.edu/k/koran/>.  The publisher in 1988 issued a paperback edition titled The Qur'an, ISBN 0-940368-18-8 (English), Dewey 297.1225.  A check was done on the Internet of The Noble Koran at <www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/>, which USED TO HAVE easily clickable three translations for each aya (verse).  (Compare wording with <http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/koran.html>, or <http://i-cias.com/e.o/texts/religion/koran003.htm>.)
Koran translations consulted on 7 Nov 2002 to check accuracy and context were:  The 1988 book just mentioned;  plus: An English Translation of the Holy Koran, tr. A Yusuf Ali, 1975, Muhammad Ashraf, Lahore;  and The Bounteous Koran, tr. Dr M.M.Khatib, 1986, Macmillan Press, London; and The Quran, tr. Muhammad Zafrulla Khan, 1991, Olive Branch Press, New York.
Some time after 28 March 2003 began checking with The Koran, tr. J.M.Rodwell, 2001 (originally 1909), Phoenix Press, London, ISBN 1 84212 609 1.  On 18 Sep 2003 started checking with The Koran, tr. N.J.Dawood, 2003 revision (orig. 1956); Penguin Australia, Camberwell, ISBN 0 14 300217 1 01.
Checked on and after 14 June 2007 with The Holy Qur-ān, tr. Abdullah YUSUF ALI, revised, in Arabic with English translation and footnotes, Year 1413 H.; his wording revised and edited by The Presidency of Islamic Researches, Ifta, Call and Guidance (Saudi Arabia); Printed by the King Fahd Holy Qur-ān Printing Complex, at Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, Saudi Arabia.
ITALICS and BOLD: Italics in the Koran or Hadith text are as in reputable translations, but the Bolding has been added.
BRACKETS: Wording marked off with square brackets, doubled – "[[" and "]]" – are NOT in the translations of the Koran, Hadith, or other texts; Internet link addresses (URLs), when added to this webpage, are mostly marked off with "angle brackets" – "<" and ">" – if there is room.
TECHNICAL WORDS – Koran, Suras, Ayas:  The word "Koran" means "The Recital" or "The Recitation."  The strict transliteration from the Arabic is Qur’ān (see foreword in Rodwell's, 2001, page ix) or Qur-’ān, sometimes printed as Qur'an, Qur-an, or Quran.  Dictionaries allow the stress in the word "Koran" on either of the two syllables.
What many people call "chapters" are properly named sūrahs / surahs; each has a title in Arabic (but some differ) – not used much in this Website sub-directory – and there are English translated titles (which differ at times).  The numbering of āyas or ayas ("verses") differs between various books.  In this website, variant numbers are usually shown in parentheses, that is, round brackets.
ABROGATION – Because of the contradictions and reversals, the Koran text says that texts revealed later override texts revealed earlier, and there is a word for that theory – "abrogation."  Discussing the contradictions, and setting up the "abrogation" theory, are discussed in the Koran at: 2:106 (or 2:100); 4:82 (or 4:84); and 16:101 (or 16:103).
AND read the CONTRADICTIONS, "None can change His words" at 6:115; and the astonishing aya "Allah abrogates the interjections of Satan." 22:52
SATANIC VERSES: Yes, there WAS allegedly a Satanic interjection – a section in Surah 53 temporising with the idea of intercession with Allah by three of the Arabian godesses.  The words were supposedly inserted by Satan (the devil), and later "abrogated" by Muhammad, saying the reversal came from Allah.
53:19. Did you see Al-Lat and Al-Ozza,
20. And Manat the third idol besides ?
These are the exalted females,
And truly their intercession may be expected.
Muhammad repudiated the (unnumbered) verses in a few days, saying that they were a Satanic suggestion, and he replaced them with the text as it now stands.  (see J.M.Rodwell's translation, 2001, endnote 7 on page 487, relating to Sura 53, ayas 19 and 20.
The idolatry-leaning verses (or ayas) are the original "Satanic verses."  (Those words became part of modern global religious intolerance history when the author Salman Rushdie published a book The Satanic Verses, and some time later he was ordered in a "fatwa" to be murdered, and a £1 million bounty put on his head, by the head Muslim cleric of Iran.  The rest of the Muslim world did NOT issue a "fatwa" ordering the Iranian cleric to cancel his fatwa.)
UNCERTAIN TIME-LINE – Of course, if LATER contradictory teachings "abrogate" (that is, cancel out) earlier ones, it is only human to ask, Which are the earlier and which are the later texts?  The surahs (i.e., chapters) are NOT published in the order of their being written.  Traditionally, under the name of each surah, "Mecca" or "Medina" are given, leading scholars to devise theories of whether Mahomet / Muhammad dictated them during those periods of his life.  Scholars and preachers have theories about when each part of the Koran was written, sometimes different dates being assigned to some verses inside a surah.  No certainty exists.
SCRIPTURE: Hebrew-Aramaic, Greek, Arabic:  In these webpages, the word "scripture" is applied in the following manner.
Hebrew-Aramaic scripture refers to the collection of allegedly heaven-inspired sacred and/or holy scriptural books mainly in Hebrew (with some Aramaic) by the Israelites and Judaic (Jewish) religionists, part of which is called the Torah.  It would be impossible to obey every one of the various contradictory teachings in the Hebrew-Aramaic scriptures.  They are often referred to as just "Hebrew" scriptures.
The Christian Churches call some of these books "The Old Testament" of their Bible, though the Roman Catholic sect has added some Greek-language Jewish writings (from the Septuagint) into its Old Testament.  The Orthodox Churches do not accept most of these books as being "scripture."  Many Reformed Churches reject them all, and call these writings the apocrypha.
Greek scripture usually refers to the collection of allegedly heaven-inspired sacred and/or holy scriptural books in Koine (i.e., non-classical, or common) Greek supposedly written under the inspiration of God, allegedly by associates and/or very early successors to the Apostles and Disciples of Jesus Christ.  Nearly all Christians call this collection "The New Testament" of their Bible.  It is allegedly the Christians' rule of life, read in conjunction with and subservient to the Old Testament, though most sects disobey, evade, or contradict some or many of their various teachings.
Arabic scripture refers to the collection of allegedly heaven-inspired sacred and/or holy scriptural writings in Arabic supposedly on plates with Allah in heaven, allegedly dictated from about 610 of the Common Era (610 A.D.) by the angel Gabriel to a Meccan Arab named Halabid, who later adopted the name Muhammed (Mahomet).  Muslims call this the "Quran," in English traditionally written "Koran."  Various Muslim sects interpret the Koran in various contradictory ways.
It is often interpreted by comparing it with traditions in the Hadeeth (Hadith), plus stories of Muhammed's life in the Sita, rulings of the various schools of legalism of Shariah law, AND fatwahs issued by any of the self-appointed leaders of sections of Islam.
Gabriel, "angel" or "archangel" ?  In spite of the custom of a major Christian sect, the Roman Catholics, to call Gabriel an "archangel," the word "archangel" occurs only twice in the Greek-language Christian scriptures (McKenzie, J.L., 1968, Roman Catholic, Dictionary of the Bible, Geoffrey Chapman, London, page 52; and Cruden's Concordance, and Strong's Concordance, both Reformed) – Jude verse 9 (about Michael), and in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 about an unnamed spirit who will call out on the Last Day.
Gabriel appears twice in the Hebrew scripture book Daniel, and twice in the Greek scripture book Luke – he is called an "angel" in those books.  (See The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, 1966, p. 483, and Cruden's Complete Concordance, 1969, p. 241.)   In an apocryphal (rejected) book called Enoch (supposedly pre-Christian), Gabriel is listed as one of seven archangels (McKenzie, p 291).  The Muslim writings call him an "angel," similar to the accepted Hebrew and Greek scriptures.
GENERAL TEXTUAL EXPLANATIONS:
ELLIPSIS = "…" IN QUOTED PASSAGES (i.e., citations) in many other writings and on this website shows the reader where words have been left out.  If the three full-stops (Ellipsis) are also in single square brackets, like this […], it means a fair number of words have been omitted.  And if the omission is shown like this, [***], it means a very long passage has been omitted.  These conventions have been adopted to help people who are trying to search original documents, books, or webpages to check for context, accuracy, and nearby wording, or context.
ERROR DETECTION: Since December 2006 when the first version of this document was put on the Internet, and parts distributed in other ways, there has not been any report of any error.  If any error/s is/are discovered, please urgently help by telling the Webmaster.
HYPHEN " - " IN WEB ADDRESSES as showing on screen or on paper:  In some URLs (WWW Addresses) on this Website, an occasional hyphen ("-") might appear in an Internet Address (URL) on the monitor screen or on paper, but it might only be there to aid the spacing.  If the URL does not work, try omitting the hyphen.  If that does not work, access the webpage and click the link.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: The University of Southern California (Center for Muslim-Jewish Engagement), for on-line Koran and Hadith translations, seemingly taken from books.  HOWEVER, the direct clickable links were first of all made more long-winded, and then became inoperable some time on or before September 19, 2011.  Other sources are also acknowledged on these webpages.
   FURTHER STUDY:
"Jihad: The teaching of Islam from its primary sources – the Quran and Hadith," A study by Rev. Richard P. Bailey. (24 A4 pages, first sighted 05 May 2011).
"Does Islam regard men and women as equal? Is there a mention of the equality of women in the qur'an?" Islam QA - Question and Answer, Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid (5 A4 pages, first sighted 05 May 2011). Quotation:
Other examples include the following, which is not a comprehensive list.
There are other differences between the sexes, including the following:
  • A man can marry four women, but a woman can only have one husband.
  • A man has the right to issue a divorce and it is valid if he does so, but a woman does not have the right to issue a divorce.
  • A man may marry a woman from among the People of the Book (Jews and Christians), but a Muslim woman may not marry anyone but a Muslim.
  • A man may travel without his wife or any of his mahrams, but a woman may not travel unless she is accompanied by a mahram.
  • Prayer in the mosque is obligatory for men, but not for women; a woman’s prayer in her house is more beloved to Allaah.
  • A woman may wear silk and gold, but a man must not wear them.
Everything that we have mentioned is based on the difference between men and women, because the male is not like the female. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
       “And the male is not like the female” {Aal ‘Imraan 3:36}
SUBMISSION.ORG, which was used for variety and the brevity of its Internet Address for a few years, seemed to be dysfunctional on September 8, 2011.  On the browser Internet Explorer there came a message saying that the Submission.org website had changed:
"In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.   Welcome to Submission.org! Oops!  We are very sorry, but the page you have requested doesn't seem to exist, though it might have been here in the past!
Our site has recently gone through some changes, but you may well find what you are looking for via the options in the menu, or just click here to go to the front.
Chances are you got here through searching for one of these common topics:
What is Jihad? / Meaning of Jihad in Islam / Islam and terrorism
Womens' rights in Islam / Are women oppressed in Islam?
Music is not prohibited in Islam / Is music prohibited in Islam?
Dogs are not prohibited in Islam / Are dogs prohibited in Islam?
       God bless, Editors of Submission.org , info@submission.org
Whenever you want to pursue the truth and verify anything you hear about Islam, we urge you to please use the only valid and divine source of Islam, Quran."

       Then that automatically switched to:
"Welcome to Submission.org!  To access our new site properly, you need a modern standards-compliant webbrowser with JavaScript enabled.  Newer browsers are generally safer and faster also, and they are free to download and easy to install, leaving little excuse to use an old one.  But don't feel embarrased - just upgrade your browser and come back. Thank you!
    * Mozilla Firefox (our recommendation!)
    * Google Chrome
    * Opera"

Well, I wonder how the founders of Islam would think that it was part of a pious Islamic website's mission to insist on a more modern internet browser !  And to decline to allow the visitor to access the Koran, which the website had given in its entirety, with its own translation, it seemed.
After a few more clicks, 5:51 was displayed with the following internet address <http://submission.org/d/x/Quran_Inspector_EN_AR.html#5f_51> reading: "O you who believe, do not take certain Jews and Christians as allies; these are allies of one another. Those among you who ally themselves with these belong with them. God does not guide the transgressors."
Where did the word "certain" come from ?  It isn't in the Dawood, Pickthal or Yusuf Ali translations.  Those who understand are invited to check the Arabic in a book, or at http://www.multimediaquran.com/quran/005/005-051.htm
LAST MODIFIED: Original document was started on October 7, 2002, Enlarged in Microsoft ® Word © up to when the Koran extracts were copied onto a webpage for which the basic design was hived off with Microsoft ® WordPad © on 14 December 2006; The first Hadith extracts were typed in on 18 Dec 06; Esperanto La Korano added 07 Mar 07; renamed this webpage by adding word "Key" 02 Sep 07; large number of footnotes and cross-references between the Koran and the Hadith composed around 10 to 12 May 2011; Because the University of Southern California searchable and clickable Koran and Hadith websites have seemingly been crippled, I switched all visible URLs to another clickable website gradually in September and October 2011, finishing them plus some non-visible URLs on 01 Nov 2011; this repaired version last modified (~ 21 or 22 pp altogether) on 01 Feb 2012
