    • SULTAN, Wafa; 2010;   A GOD WHO HATES:  

      
       Wafa Sultan describes herself as an atheist. Her autobiographical book, A God Who Hates, is a witness statement concerning Islam's God, of whom she writes, "I did see the influence he wielded, and in order to dispel his influence, I have to deal with him as if he exists" (p.46).        At the heart of Sultan's courageous book is a testimony concerning the treatment of women in Muslim societies. This, as she experienced it, was horrific.
       She tells of how her grandmother was forced to welcome her grandfather's second wife by dancing at their wedding; of harrowing insights into family sexual abuse – many instances of incest rape came to her attention when pregnancy brought the female victims into her surgery; of the murder of women who had the misfortune to fall pregnant, often at the hands of the very same male relative who had raped them; of abuse by the medical profession and employers; of sexual harassment of single women in public places – the movements of female students on a bus "resembled those mice attempting to flee from a malicious cat" (p.29); of the oppressive system of guardianship which men exercise over women in Islam; and, perhaps most movingly of all, of the self-rejecting words she heard coming from the mouths of abused female patients.
       A question that cries out from this litany of suffering is "Why?" After many years of observation and study, Sultan came to what seemed to her to be an inescapable conclusion:  that all the abuses she was observing around her were due to Islam and its God.
       Sultan offers this warning to the world:  "The status of women in Muslim countries is a human catastrophe that the world has ignored for centuries, and for which it is now paying a high price for ignoring."
       The price, she suggests, is that oppressed and subjugated women cannot raise emotionally well and mentally healthy men.
       The "invisible Muslim woman" is "the hen who incubates the eggs of terrorism" (p.135). Sultan's answer to the post-9/11 question, "Why do they hate us?", is "Because Muslims hate their women, and any group who hates their women can't love anyone else."  Why do they hate their women? "Because their God does" (p.7).
       Sultan believes that the retrograde features of the God of Islam were originally due to the harsh desert environment in which he was created by the minds of the Arabs, so many centuries ago.
       She contends that the harsh and fear-oriented desert mind-set is merely a primitive backwardness, which must be replaced by a more enlightened world-view.  The desert God of fear and hate, she says, must be displaced.   This is for her an inevitable and necessary product of human progress.
       Sultan holds America up as her dream land of freedom and human dignity, a vision of the progress which she hopes the Muslim world will enjoy.  However the evil of abuse of women is not limited to Islamic societies, and there is something naive about Sultan's trust in progress.
       Sultan provides many references to the Koran and traditions of Muhammad, in order to make clear how Islamic teachings condition Muslim men to ill-treat Muslim women.
       However this book is not a reference work on Islamic law.  Rather it is an intensely personal document, the diary of a soul walking a long, difficult and dangerous journey out of darkness into hard-won freedom.
       The author is a compassionate and brave woman, who writes with terrible frankness about her experiences, but dares to dream and hope for a better world, shaped by a loving God.

       [COMMENT: These are very true words.  A close study of the Just World Campaign website could lead historically-minded readers to the conclusion that Mahomet took what was worst from an older religion, adding extra flourishes.  There are writings that suggest that this older religion, and Christianity as it strayed, borrowed from even older cultures, including Babylon. 
       Amazingly, the "advanced nations" are pretending that Mohammedanism is just another faith, such as the "Calathumpians" or "Bush Baptists," and are now actually prosecuting people who produce evidence that it is a culture seeking world conquest by intimidation and violence. COMMENT ENDS.]

       BOOK REVIEW:- How the West capitulates to militant Islam.  THE THIRD CHOICE: Islam, Dhimmitude and Freedom; by Mark Durie; (Melbourne: Deror Books) Paperback: 260 pages, ISBN 9780980722307, Rec. price: $24.95; Reviewed by Mervyn Bendle
       The title of this riveting and important book by Mark Durie comes from the fundamental Islamic principle that non-Muslims have three choices in a Sharia-dominated world:  embrace Islam, be killed or enslaved, or live as subservient and tax-paying dhimmis.  It shows not only how this "third choice" is rooted in the Koran and the earliest history of Islam, but also how it has been absorbed into the fabric of Western liberal democracies, paralysing their capacity to respond to the clear and immediate danger that they face from an ancient foe.
       This is a fact of vital importance.  As the great historian of Islam, Bernard Lewis has pointed out, the 9/11 attacks symbolised a shift in the world comparable with the fall of Rome and the discovery of America.  In this new era Islam is re-asserting its traditional role as a great power bearing what it sees as the final revelation of God [Allah], and has returned to its view of global history as "as the cosmic struggle between the two main faiths, Christianity and Islam".  Tragically for the West, Christianity has lost both its confidence and its comparable sense of mission, while Islam is now driven and energised by a fierce triumphalism.
       A key passage in this book illustrates this situation.  There, Mark Durie, PhD, vicar of St Mary's Anglican Church in Caulfield, Victoria, recounts events surrounding an interfaith service held at the Trinity Episcopalian Church, Boston, only three days after the 9/11 attacks.  The church's minister, the Reverend Lloyd, welcomed the presence of Dr Walid Fitaihi, representing the Islamic Society of Boston, remarking how the latter's "gentle, holy manner touched everyone", and was "an enormously hopeful sign [for] a divided world" (p.226).  While Rev. Lloyd saw the service as an affirmation of common humanity, one of his parishioners gave Dr Fitaihi a note asking this Muslim leader – as bodies were still being retrieved from the wreckage of the World Trade Center – to "forgive us for our past and for our present.  Keep proselytising to us" (p.227).
       For his part, Dr Fitaihi saw the event not only as an occasion when Christians could admit their guilt, beg forgiveness, and betray their faith, but also opportunistically as da'wa, a chance to advance the cause of Islam.  He reported proudly to an Egyptian weekly how his speech in Boston "explained Islam's stance and principles, and its sublime precepts", how he'd recited verses from the Koran, and how "the entire church burst into tears upon hearing … the words of Allah!!", concluding with "absolute confidence that over the next few years, Islam will spread in America and in the entire world", because the 9/11 attacks meant that "the entire world is asking, 'What is Islam?'"  Indeed, he exalted that "the rate of converts to Islam since September 11 has doubled" (pp.226-7).
       It is a troubling paradox that the terrorist 9/11 declaration of war by Islamism against the West (reinforced by innumerable subsequent attacks) led not to a hardening of resolve but to a widespread capitulation to Muslim demands across the globe, especially in the very societies that Islamists and jihadis have explicitly targeted for subversion and destruction.  This is most obvious in the United Kingdom, but is also very apparent in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia, where the battle is being lost in the areas of academic research, public policy, education, ideology, law, human rights and, particularly, the realm of free speech.  Durie's book allows us to see this behaviour not only as the appearance or re-emergence of dhimmitude, the condition in which Christians, Jews and other non-Muslims live as dhimmis, occupying a supine and servile position of supreme subservience to Muslims; but also of a dhimmi mentality, which accepts or even embraces such a status, and is found amongst naïve and guilt-burdened politicians, community leaders, academics, intellectuals, the media, Christian leaders and theologians, their parishioners and the general public in the West.
       As a result, key leaders and organisations in the West display a massive failure of resolve, amounting to cowardice and servility, when faced with the belligerent and intransigent self-assertion of Islam.  Durie provides various examples (pp.211-3).  These include political leaders such as French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who opined in January 2008 that Islam "is one of the greatest and most beautiful civilisations the world has known"; UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, who asserted in 2002 that "it is important to recognise the greatness of Islam [and its] profound theology [which is] entirely consonant with the principal of fundamental human rights", adding (ludicrously) that Islam "bestowed rights upon women and children long before … other civilisations"; and Barack Obama, who expressed "deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over the centuries to shape the world – including in my own country", which, incredibly, can only mean America.
       Only days before, Obama had made his own sense of dhimmitude obvious with a deep and demeaning bow to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at the G-2O meeting in London, an act that was noted with great satisfaction throughout the Muslim world.
       Religious and judicial leaders have also demonstrated their dhimmi mentality.  For example, the Bishop of Bradford rejected the appeals of a family of Christian converts from Islam who were being victimised by local Muslim gangs, declaring that "the Anglican Church would not welcome such converts [and that] he did not want Muslim converts" (p.220).  Similarly, both the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales urged that Britain should consider "embracing Sharia Law", because "it's not as if we're bringing in an alien and rival system" (pp. 219-20).
       In 2003, the leader of the American Episcopalian Church declared on an Islamic website that "the US should not be a super-power, but a 'super-servant'" (p.220-1), which Muslims immediately saw as a concession of Christianity's "self-acknowledged inferiority".  And in 2007, a full-page advertisement appeared in the New York Times, paid for by a group of Yale theologians and endorsed by 300 Christian leaders.  Addressed to Muslim scholars, these Christians expressed their own "humility", praised the "generosity" of the Muslims, and asked for the "forgiveness of the All-Merciful One and of the Muslim community around the world" (pp.221-2).
       Ironically, the intended targets of this sycophancy were at that very moment broadcasting fatwas "condemning converts from Islam to Christianity as apostates [and] characterising them as deserving of death" (p. 222).
       As Durie emphasises, what such naïve and simplistic attempts at bridge-building fail to realise is the foundational assumption amongst Muslims that Islam is the supreme faith, the final revelation from God, and consequently supersedes, relativises, and corrects Christianity.  Moreover, Islam enjoys a profound sense of inevitable conquest, as the noted Muslim scholar, Bassam Tibi, emphasises in a passage quoted by Durie:  "Muslims are religiously obliged to disseminate the Islamic faith throughout the world. … If non-Muslims submit to conversion or subjugation, this call can be pursued peacefully.  If they do not, Muslims are obliged to wage war against them" (p.118-9).  There is therefore no room for compromise or any sense of "live-and-let-live" – only submission, death, or dhimmitude.
       As a result, "in the Islamic world-view, Islam takes on the role of a dominator that expects to be treated as superior, to be praised, admired, and stroked.  It takes this service for granted, feeling entitled to it" (p.222).
      Efforts to bring a critical perspective to campuses are routinely shut down by university administrators or by Muslim and radical students sanctioned by the authorities.  
       When modern Christians go out of their way to attract criticism, express guilt and seek forgiveness, this appears from an Islamic perspective to be just an appropriate demonstration of submission to Islam.  In contrast, Islam itself exhibits not only a profound certitude about its mission, but also an often hysterical aversion to criticism or any failure to recognise its supremacy:  Muslim "reaction to reasonable criticism, when it manages to find a voice, can be shock, denial and outrage.  Even mild inquiry can cause a howl of rage to rise up" (pp. 222-3).  In a word: there is no reciprocity in Islam.
       Intellectual dhimmitude is very noticeable in the universities and schools, where hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent globally since 9/11 to establish centres for Islamic, Middle East and Arabic studies, all of which take a generally sympathetic line on the (largely self-inflicted) situation of Islam in the world today.  However, there is little robust debate, and efforts to bring a critical perspective to campuses are routinely shut down by university administrators or by Muslim and radical students sanctioned by the authorities.  Legal action has also been taken against critics under laws specifically designed to silence them.  The result has generally been the promulgation of a dhimmi mentality amongst academics and their students, the empowerment of radical Islamist groups and front men, and the ideological subversion of the military, police forces, security agencies, and domestic and foreign policy bodies that use these centres for training and education purposes.
       In confronting this situation, Durie's book is particularly valuable.  It is both accessible and comprehensive, making it useful for both specialists and laypersons alike.  It provides essential information about the basic beliefs and practices of Islam, the life and role of Muhammad, the relevant history of Islam, the origins and history of the doctrine of the dhimma, how dhimmitude operates in the everyday life of non-Muslims in Muslim societies, its resurgence in contemporary times, and possible ways through which Christians and other non-Muslims may seek to overcome it and heal the damage that it has done.  In addition, it is full of concrete examples that vividly illustrate various points of the discussion, as we have seen above.
       Overall, this is an excellent book and it is heartening that Australia has courageous independent scholars like Mark Durie who are prepared to tackle head-on the challenges of militant Islam, and the condition of dhimmitude it wants to impose on us all.

       The sad fact is that in Afghanistan, killing a woman is like killing a bird. The United States has tried to justify its occupation with rhetoric about "liberating" Afghan women but we remain caged in our country, without access to justice and still ruled by women-hating criminals. Fundamentalists still preach that "a woman should be in her house or in her grave". In most places it is still not safe for a woman to appear in public uncovered or to walk on the street without a male relative. Girls are still sold into marriage. Rape goes unpunished every day.
       This grim assessment comes from the introduction to Malalai Joya's memoir, Raising My Voice. When the US-led coalition overthrew the despised Taliban regime, democratic polls were held and Joya was elected to the Afghan Grand Assembly, known as the Loya Jirga. At age 27 she was the youngest provincial delegate, and one of the very few women to be elected later to the new parliament. Most of the other female delegates were of a fundamentalist persuasion.
       In December 2003, Joya caused an international sensation when she rose and denounced fellow members as corrupt warlords and criminals. She describes them further as theocrats, fascists and druglords. …
       On May 21, 2007, she was suspended from Parliament, sparking international outrage. […]
       "Unfortunately, the situation in my country since the 9/11 tragedy has, day by day, gone to a disaster," she told The West Australian.  And it is getting worse because the US and Australia have replaced the Taliban with the Northern Alliance fundamentalists. Today we have a mafia system. Most people, day by day, are getting poorer, especially half the population who are women … And a bunch of terrorists are, day by day, getting richer. Mentally, they are the same as the Taliban. The Government in Afghanistan is one of the most corrupt in the world. And the situation for women is catastrophic and getting worse, including rape."
       She cites the case of a 14-year-old girl, an only daughter, who was brutally raped earlier this year. Her ravaged body was found by her parents thrown on a garbage heap.
       "The Government is the sworn enemy of women's rights and human rights," Joya says. "That is why the situation is a disaster. So long as these fundamentalist warlords are in power there is no hope of positive change. I think if we want to … bring real democracy to our country, we must support the democratically minded, well-educated men and women in Afghanistan. But there is no place for them. They are often in underground organisations. The only hope for our country lies in such organisations. But the democrats are not getting the support they need from the West."
       So has any progress been made since the overthrow of the Taliban? "In some larger cities, like Kabul, women do have some access to jobs and education. But the women have security problems. In these circumstances, how can we talk about genuine human rights and women's rights? There is no justice in Afghanistan. Some mothers are prepared to sell their babies for as little as $10. But the US and its allies spend hundreds of millions of dollars in Afghanistan on the war."
       Joya says the $10 billion that came from the international community for reconstruction has gone to warlords and narco-terrorists. More than 70 per cent of Afghans survive on less than $2 a day. Life expectancy is below 45 years. "In the past few years, hundreds of women have literally burned themselves to death to escape their miseries," Joya notes in Raising My Voice.
       And she sees the Obama administration as worse than that of George Bush: "He wants to send more troops to Afghanistan. That will bring more violence. More innocent people will become victims, most of them women and children. Our people are squashed between internal enemies and external enemies. The US and its allies are bombing from the sky and killing innocent civilians, while Taliban and the Northern Alliance fundamentalists are negotiating with each other."
       She insists that the US and its 40 allied countries are in Afghanistan only to bolster their own strategic positions in international affairs.

    Arrogance born of ignorance

    SIDE COMMENTARY by Quentin C. Fortis, of Perth, 2008: Dr Patrick Sookhdeo quotes the late Kalim Siddiqui, who arrived in Britain in 1954, and wrote during 1988-89 "At some stage we may have to engage in a campaign of civil disobedience …" (p 95)
       In another place Siddiqui wrote "… Islam became the dominant civilization of the Arabian Peninsula in the lifetime of the Prophet … remained the dominant civilization of the world for more than a thousand years …" (p 96)
       He is one of the many Muslim writers who do not understand world history -- for example, while Muslim Arabs were attacking and conquering their neighbours, they had no idea that the American civilisations such as the Incas and Aztecs even existed, nor of the Australian-Aborigines, the Papuans, the Maori and Pacific Islander culture, etc.  They were probably largely ignorant of the great Chinese civilisation, and of the Viking-Norseman and Celtic civilisations, which they never conquered, and some of the African kingdoms and cultures.
       The marvellous Eastern Roman (i.e., Byzantine) civilisation withstood the attacks of the Persians (Zoroastrians, who stole Syria, Palestine, and Egypt in the period AD 614 to 619, which is BEFORE Mohammed left Mecca for Yathrib in 622.  He renamed that city Medina).
       In spite of Islamic and other attacks and peace treaties interspersed with Islamic raids and attacks for centuries, the Byzantine civilisation continued shining, spreading its influence into Russia, where it outlived the fall of Constantinople.
       But, to put the word "civilisation" into context, let me quote that during the siege of Constantinople, on April 29, 1453 the Orthodox "Christian" Byzantines beheaded 260 Ottoman prisoners.
       Constantinople fell to Ottoman Turkish Islamists on May 29, 1453 -- that's more than 800 years after Islamic civilisation supposedly started being the "dominant" civilisation for 1000 years!  And Mistra and Trebizond did not fall until 1460 and 1461 respectively. (D. Nicolle, J.Haldon, and S.Turnbull, 2007, The fall of Constantinople, Osprey Publishing, Oxford and New York, p 13)
       No-one who knows that Spain and Portugal, after Columbus's first voyage in 1492, stole the two Americas from the inhabitants and became the dominant powers in the Atlantic Ocean and beyond, will believe Kalim Siddiqui's boast.  But Islam is full of unreal beliefs.
       And in his own way, with his belief in Christianity, this latest book by Dr Sookhdeo exposes Islam's arrogance born of ignorance.
       Muslim lawyers in Britain seem to have won permission to argue their cases with their faces veiled, even if it muffles their words in court (p 69-70).
       There have been a number of attacks on church buildings, church leaders and converts from Islam to Christianity (p 73).  There has been a growth in anti-Jewish attacks.
       The United Kingdom has become a centre of radical Islamist propaganda for jihad (holy war) in languages including English, Arabic and Urdu (a language of the Indian subcontinent). (p 78)
       Books published by the Hamas publishing house called Filastin al-Muslimah Publications include biographies of its senior terrorists, glorifying martyrdom and suicide bombings. (pp 78-79)
       Chapter five gives notes on 37 Muslim writers of the 20th and 21st centuries who are impacting on the nature of British Islam.
       Islamic financial institutions are very strong in Britain, which a 2004 survey indicated was the most "Shari‘a-friendly" in Europe (p 193).
       The book quotes Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who expects a peaceful conquest of Europe by Islam (p. 226).
       The British government is strongly backing the move of Muslim Turkey to join the European Union (p 227).  The Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, goes further, seeking that North African countries ought to join in due course.  With the birthrate among Muslims being far higher than among non-Muslims, the implications for all Europe would be profound (p 228).
       "There is no precedent of a non-Muslim society successfully halting the advance of Islam by peaceful means … British … liberties and equalities … would be at risk if the Islamic faith … were to gain the power it craves." (p 229)
       The terrorist organisation, the Muslim Brotherhood, on May 22, 1991, issued its "Strategy for North America."  A photostat is given, in Arabic and English, in an appendix (pp 231-262)
       It is explained that the Islamists develop a "parallel society," and as the Islamic Council of Europe argued in 1978, step by step the Muslim moves towards having political power as a constituent community of the nation, and then moves to generalise Islam to the entire nation (p 223).
       The date 20 November AD 1979 was the start of the new century in the Islamic calendar, 1 Muharram AH 1400.  A mediaeval Egyptian scholar, Imam al-Suyuti, had predicted that Jesus and the Antichrist were likely to appear in the fifteenth Islamic century.  Hence it was no accident that the Iranian Islamic Revolution occurred in AD 1979, and that the Muslim mosque in Mecca was attacked by "pious" Muslims on the actual day, 20 November 1979 itself (p 224).
       In the foreword, Professor Peter G. Riddell of the London School of Theology writes: "I strongly affirm Dr Sookhdeo's two-fold call:  first to the British government and establishment not to engage in appeasement as a solution to inter-community problems; and second, to peaceful and progressive Muslims to take a strong public stand against radicals, and to push for reform and reinterpretation of the fundamental ingredients of their faith to address any doctrines or teachings which provide sustenance to radical ideologies (page v).

    Islam’s cruel and unusual punishment


       Book Review of Cruel and (Un)usual Punishment; The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law, written by Nonie Darwish (Thomas Nelson, 2008)
       Nonie Darwish knows a fair amount about Islam. She was an Egyptian Muslim for the first 30 years of her life. Then she fled to America and she is now a Christian. She has told her story earlier, in her 2007 volume, Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on Terror.        In this book she continues her important story, but she does so by highlighting two crucial themes: what sharia law means, and how women are treated in Islam. In 270 pages she spells out in chilling detail what the implications are of Islamic law, and how the West must be very careful indeed about the spread of sharia.
       The first half of this important book looks at how women are treated in the world of sharia. The treatment of women in Islam alone should serve as a warning for anyone who thinks sharia is compatible with Western democracy and freedom.
       Consider marriage. Muslim women are prohibited under sharia from marrying non-Muslim men. But Muslim men can marry Christian or Jewish women. And the sharia marriage contract "is essentially a document granting sexual intercourse rights to the male and giving him total control over his four wives".
       There are even temporary marriages purely for the purposes of sexual pleasure for the male, called mutaa, or pleasure marriage. This "marriage" can last as little as an hour. Then there is misyar, or traveller's marriage, which is "designed to accommodate the male sexual appetite while travelling".
       Divorce is of course also all one way traffic in Islam. Men can divorce their wives instantly, simply by saying "I divorce you" three times. A Muslim woman cannot initiate a divorce. In custody cases, children after the age of seven (or sometimes nine) belong to the father.
       And a male can beat his wife and sexually abandon her. Under sharia a husband deserves total submission and gratitude. As one revered Muslim scholar, Imam Ghazali has said, "Marriage is a form of slavery. The woman is man's slave, and her duty therefore is absolute obedience".
       Polygamy is also the right of Muslim men. But even more abhorrent is the practice of sexual gratification with children. There is no legal age for marriage under sharia. Thus the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, for example, said in an official statement, "A man can quench his sexual lusts with a child as young as a baby." 1
       Of course Muhammad himself had a six-year-old wife, with whom he consummated relations when she was just nine. And Islamic leaders argue that his life serves as an example and pattern for all Muslims. This is all codified in surah 65:4 in the Koran.
       There are plenty of other misogynist elements to sharia law. Women adulterers are to be stoned to death; girls who fornicate are to be flogged; a woman's testimony in a court of law is only worth half that of a man's; women cannot be in the company of men who are not her relatives; female genital mutilation is rife; a Muslim wife needs her husband's permission to travel; and so on.
       Then there is the issue of honour killing. While there is no sharia law that expressly gives men the right to kill their women to protect their family honour, there are existing laws which protect men who do commit such killings. Indeed, sharia states that a killer of an apostate, a robber or an adulterer cannot be punished for murder.
       In the rest of the book Darwish looks at life "behind the Muslim curtain" - what life is like for non-Muslims under sharia law. Non-Muslims are treated almost as poorly as women in Muslim-majority countries. Jews and Christians are under dhimmitude, or second-class citizenship. Darwish chronicles the many ways in which non-Muslims are oppressed, discriminated against, and denied basic human rights.
       And ordinary Muslims who dare to think independently of sharia are also subject to tremendous opposition and oppression. Criticism of Islam is of course punishable by death. Muhammad himself ordered the killing of those who dared to criticise him.
       All the various schools of Islam agree that blasphemy or criticism of Islam is a capital offence. And Muslim imams do not expect to be questioned or challenged in any way. In such a world there is "no intellectual honesty, no dialogue, and no respect".
       Muslim preachers regard Westerners and Jews as the embodiment of evil, the personification of Satan. Therefore they can be cursed, deceived and killed. Indeed, according to sharia, lying and deception are obligatory at times when dealing with the enemies of Islam. This is part of the overall jihad being waged against infidels.
       After reading so much detail about what sharia teaches and commands, one is left overwhelmed. As Darwish says, "The West should be clear on the nature of Sharia. It is nothing more than legal tyranny, a terminal disease that destroys the healthy functioning of society where everything is sacrificed for the sake of total control".
       Indeed, says Darwish, Islam is not really a religion as much as it is a system of complete control and social order. It is an intolerant worldview which allows no opposition or questioning. Thus the West should resolutely oppose what she calls "Islamo-Fascism". We should not tolerate intolerance.
       She concludes her book with practical suggestions for the West, including keeping sharia illegal, restricting immigration, and monitoring Muslim clerics on what they are preaching and teaching. And the West must rediscover and celebrate its Judeo-Christian heritage and values, and resist the inroads of secularism.
       If it does not, the vacuum caused by secularism will be quickly filled by a totalising Islam which seeks absolute control and the global extension of sharia. The aims of the Islamists are the very opposite of those who champion freedom and democracy. We must choose which system we wish to live under.
       Darwish has nicely laid out the implications of life under sharia. It is up to us how we respond.

    There aren't many novelists who'll confess to deciding the direction of their literary career on the toss of a coin. But Pakistani-born British novelist Nadeem Aslam likes to tell people he did exactly that. It happened that way, explains the 42-year-old novelist, because after he wrote his award-winning debut novel, Season of Rainbirds (1993), he had two novels inside him, bursting to get out.        "He appears on the pages of my very first novel, Season of Rainbirds," Aslam continues. "He takes toys from children's hands and he breaks them and he hands them back, because toys are idols. My uncle used to do that to us, and yet there were other uncles who actually would buy us toys, so I was aware of these tensions, long before the world became aware of it."        McGILL University Anthropology Professor Philip Carl Salzman is a truly intrepid man. With Promethean boldness (pun intended), Salzman's pellucid, remarkably compendious, and brilliantly argued 'Culture and Conflict in the Middle East,' defies academia's pervasive, stultifying Islamo-sycophantism.
       Professor Salzman, the founding chair of the Commission on Nomadic Peoples, who served in that position for 15 years (1978-1993), previously conducted fieldwork among nomadic, pastoral tribes in Iranian Baluchistan in 1967-68, 1972-73, and 1976.  He is the author of the earlier anthropological studies, Black Tents of Baluchistan; Pastoralism: Equality, Hierarchy, and the State; and Understanding Culture. 
       Central to understanding Salzman's conception of Middle Eastern Arab culture is the form of social control he denotes as 'balanced opposition.'  His operational definition of this 'ingenious' system for providing security, in particular, is as follows:
       Everybody is a member of a nested set of kin groups, from very small to very large.  These groups are vested with responsibility for the defence of each and every one of its members and responsibility for the harm each and every one of its members do to outsiders. [***]
       G. H. Bousquet, the great 20th century scholar of Islamic jurisprudence, observed how the permanent institution of jihad war, and the related imposition of Islamic Law (Shari'a) upon all of humanity -- both Muslims and non-Muslims -- reflected the 'doubly totalitarian' quintessence of Islam.
       Salzman's analysis demonstrates further how balanced opposition functioning at subordinate levels of organization (i.e., relative to Islam and the Islamic umma) - from lineage, clan, and tribe, through tribal confederacies -- amplifies 'particularisms' that also promote, anti-democratic authoritarianism.
       The late P.J. Vatikiotis (d. 1997), a renowned political scientist who focused on the modern era in the Middle East, and also lived for extended periods in the region, combined, to an extent, the perspectives of Bousquet and Salzman in his 1981 analysis (from Le Debat, [Paris], no. 14, July-August, 1981).        For 174 days in 2006 Mrs Melissa Hawach was without her two girls.  Her husband had taken them away from Canada to Lebanon, and her family had to hire a security team in order to get them back.

       Hinduism's killing of widows is criticised (p 208), and their idea of a limited number of years for hell's duration is discussed (p 219).
       Judaism and Islam are criticised in the pages opposing the circumcision of little boys, and the animists and some Muslims are criticised for cutting part of little girls' pudendae (see p 223).  He also excoriates the masturbation taboo (see pp 214-15 and 226 ff).
       The author quotes the damnation, by the elders of the Amsterdam Jewish synagogue on July 27, 1656, of the great thinker Baruch Spinoza, and their order that no Judaist have any contact with, or read anything written by Spinoza, giving any who did the curse which prophet Elisha laid upon the children (p 261).  (Two she-bears came and tore 42 children after the curse, according to 2 Kings 2:24, or 4 Kings 2:24 in R.C. reckoning.)  The Roman Catholic Vatican, and the Calvinist authorities in Holland, joined in the multi-national suppression of Spinoza's writings (pp 261-2).
       Bible: He sees a nightmare in the Old Testament stories, and shows that the Jewish savant Maimonides praised the crucifixion of Jesus as being a great achievement of the Jewish elders (p 111).  The author sees contradictions in the New Testament, reminds us that Mary seems not to have remembered the prophecies of the Archangel Gabriel and is surprised at Jesus' childhood talks to the temple scholars (p 116).  He gives evidence that the adulterous woman episode was not part of the original Gospel of John, chapter 8, verses 3-11 (pp 120-22).
       Orthodox Christian bishops and priests in the 20th century often blessed the genocidal army of Serbia's Slobodan Milosevic (a former Communist), which shelled the Croatian Catholic cities of Vukovar and Dubrovnik, and attacked the mainly Muslim city of Sarajevo.  His thugs dynamited several historic minarets in Banja Luka during a cease-fire as part of an effort to destroy evidence of the Ottoman Muslim occupation of Serb lands (p 21).
       Roman Catholic Church: Fascism in southern Europe around the 1930s was not condemned by the RCC.  Mussolini even gave as a justification for using poison gas against Abyssinia (Ethiopia), that the Christians there had persisted in Monophysitism (a dogma about whether Jesus had a human and / or divine nature). (see p 236)
       The Vatican signed a Concordat with the Nazi German dictator, Adolph Hitler, in 1933 (see p 228).
       "The cardinal of Austria proclaimed his enthusiasm at Hitler's takeover* of his country at the time of the Anschluss." (p 236)
       The Nazis did not keep the promises they made in the Concordat.  Yet, on the Vatican's orders, every year from 1939, on Hitler's birthday (April 20), the German leading bishop sent praise, and wrote that German Catholics were offering fervent prayers to heaven on their altars (see p 239).
       Nazi Germany's puppet regime in occupied Slovakia was actually led by an R.C. priest, Father Tiso (p 236).
       After the warmonger Hitler suicided in April 1945, the RC leader of the RC Irish Free State, Eamon de Valera, went to the German embassy in Dublin to offer Ireland's official condolences (p 237).
       After the atrocities of September 11, 2001, and an attack on Iraq was being discussed by the West, "the pope disgraced himself utterly by issuing a personal invitation to the wanted war criminal Tariq Aziz," who murdered children, and was a senior Catholic member of a ruling fascist-style party (Iraq's) (p 34).
       Islam: The Koran had been written on "paper, stones, palm leaves, shoulder blades, ribs, and bits of leather."  Some Muslim authors say it was gathered together during the first caliphate, that of Abu Bakr, immediately after Mohammad's death; others say it was the fourth caliph, Ali, who did this.  The majority, the Sunnis, say it was Caliph Uthman, reigned 644-656, who made the finalised decision (see pp 130-131).
       The Arabic language at the time had undotted and odd vowels, generating wildly different readings.  Written Arabic even today uses dots to distinguish consonants like "b" and "t", and in its original form had no sign or symbol for short vowels.  To take one instance of the difficulty, the Arabic words written on the outside of the Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem, are different from any version in the Koran.  It is doubtful that the world really has a fully accurate Koran, in spite of what Muslim leaders say (see p 131).
       The Islamic belief that all is arranged by Allah in advance, in this is somewhat similar to the predestination dogma of the Christian reformer John Calvin (see p 234), i.e., Calvinism.
       Saddam Hussein misused Islam to bolster his cruel dictatorship (pp 25-26).
       After the 2003 invasion of Iraq, an Al-Qaeda leader, Jordanian ex-gaolbird named Abu Musab as-Zarqawi, launched a frenzied campaign of murder and sabotage against the long-oppressed Shiite majority!  He wrote to his leader Osama Bin Laden that one reason was the Shiites were heretics to the Muslim faith, and secondly if a religious war could be induced in Iraq, the plans of the "crusader" West could be set at naught. (pp 26-27)
       Protestantism: Calvin's Geneva was a totalitarian state, and he burned Servetus, another reformer, alive.  Some such Christians have an urge to ban books, silence dissenters, condemn outsiders, etc. (p 233)
       German Protestantism surrendered to the German Nazi regime, except for a few brave resisters (see p 238).  The Roman Catholic Vatican headquarters co-operated with the Nazis, even ordering the Catholic Centre Party to disband (p 238).  An encyclical exposing Nazi racial and political theories, and later resistance, were "too little, too late."  Pope Pius XII's infamous 1939 letter toadying to Adolf Hitler is quoted (p 239-40).
       Other faiths: The author also exposes Buddhism by the part which it played in wartime Japan in inducing fanaticism and enrolling suicide pilots (p 201), and the Orange People (Bhagwan Sri Rajneesh, pp 195-98).  Mrs Harris exposed Joseph Smith's supposed translations of the Book of Mormon. (pp 163-4).  The author attacks several religions for fostering anti-Judaism (which, like most people, he misnames "anti-Semitism").
       Scripture he did like: The Bible verse that Hitchens likes is Philippians 4:8 (p 12).

      The Byzantine empire was not called by that name in its own time, but the people called themselves Rhomaioi, i.e., Romans.  The word "Byzantine" was used only to describe inhabitants of the capital city on the Bosphorus, Constantinople, anciently called Byzantion. (p 14).  (On maps it is now shown as Istanbul.) The Fall of Constantinople, NICOLLE, HALDON, TURNBULL
       The empire could be called the "mediaeval eastern Roman empire," but this is more longwinded than the word Byzantium used in the literature.  It was the successor empire, the eastern half of what had been the Roman empire, which at times contained the lands around the Mediterranean Sea and much of western Europe.
       Its rulers were Greek-speaking, not Latin speakers.  Its religion, as Christianity changed, became more and more what we call the Orthodox Christian faith.
       The fall of Constantinople was a shock for Christendom.  It cut the trade of the Italian states through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus to the Crimea, and thus to the growing Russian and other states bordering the Black Sea. (p 141)
       The stupidity of the Western or Latin Christians shows up at times through the pages of this book.  As the armies and navies of the pagans, i.e., the Muslim Ottoman Turks, were closing in, the Pope sent an emissary to order the beleaguered Constantinople authorities to accept the Pope as Christ's representative on earth, with full plenitude of power.  (Even when Orthodox leaders accept this, their followers prevent it occurring.)
    The Khazar alliance
       From the later 5th century to A.D. 1453, Byzantium had always been at war, defending and at times attacking (p 14).
       The steppe region from the plain of Hungary through south Russia and north of the Caspian Sea was very important to Byzantium.
       It became the home of many nomadic peoples of Turkic stock.  Constantinople had been able to establish good relations with the Chazars / Khazars from the 630s, and their khans remained faithful allies of most Byzantine emperors. (p 49)
       (Other books tells us that the Chazars became converted to Judaism, and were an important buffer state for centuries.)
       Read this fascinating book, as a beginning of the study of how greed and religious intolerance of Western Europeans, mistakes by all players, and the turns of good and bad luck over the centuries kept this brilliant civilisation alive.
       The dark side of the days of the siege include the murder by the Byzantine Orthodox "Christians" of 260 Ottoman prisoners, on April 29, 1453 (p 12), exactly a month before Constantinople fell.
       Only when the buffer state, the Hungarian empire, collapsed in the early 16th century did the other Western Christians begin to fully realise the danger from the East. (p 243)

       The Christian Byzantine (Roman Empire in the East) empire was at its height under Justinian (ruled 527-65 AD), who built Constantinople's magnificent Hagia Sophia cathedral, which after its conquest in 1453, inspired Muslim architects for centuries.
       But around 641 the Muslims had conquered Syria, a part of that Christian empire, and much of the decoration of the earliest Islamic monuments also is thus of Roman or Byzantine origin, as are the forms of some buildings. (adapted from page 14).  See pp 30-32.

       There is a disputed hadith that states that in the last days the armies of Islam will unfold black banners (like the flag of the Taliban) and come out of Khorasan.  (He had fled to Jalalabad area, and started calling the area Khorasan.) p 233
       In Egypt, on November 27, 1997, six Islamists entered a historic temple.  The tourists tried to hide, but there was no escape.  The screams of the victims were countered by the cries of "Allahu akhbar!" from the attackers.  The killing went on for 45 minutes. p 257
       The men who came to train in Afghanistan in the 1990s were from the middle or upper class, largely college-educated.  They were not over-religious, and none showed signs of mental disorders. p 301

       Zarah Ghahramani was just 20 when she was taken off the streets of Tehran and transported to Evin, a prison the size of a small town, on the outskirts of the city. The prison is used by the Iranian regime to hold political prisoners.
       She was beaten, and her head was shaved.  On release, she was dumped in a desert and stripped of her right to attend university.  She was helped out of Iran by the Australian writer Robert Hillman, who has helped her write a book about the experience: My Life as a Traitor.
       Hillman met Ghahramani in June 2003, when he was standing on a Tehran street corner, notebook in hand.  Ghahramani, who had only recently been released, noted his Western looks, walked boldly up to him and asked him if they could talk. …

       In the seventh century after Christ, when a Meccan hero spanned the ditch at Medina, and Ali, in his twenties, came from the Muslim ranks to meet him in combat, the older man called out, "Stand away, son of my brother, send forth someone older than you, for I don't want to kill you."  Ali said, "But I want to kill you!"        This incident in the life of the Prophet Muhammad gives an idea of the violence setting the tone at the very outset of Islam.  Other incidents include the piratical attacks on caravans of camels trading from Mecca to Syria, the murders of the poetess Asma (p 92) and the treacherous murder of the Judaist poet K'ab (p 92, 104), the taking of prisoners for ransom, and the stealing of property by caravan raids or conquest of towns.
       One of the most telling incidents is the attack by young Medina men, breaking the truce of the sacred month, on a Quraysh small caravan travelling without precautions.  The raiding Muslim band killed, stole, and took prisoners. (p 83)   (The Quraysh was Muhammad's own tribe -- that is, his relations and most-friendly acquaintances.)
       Muhammad received the raiders in silence, but later supposedly received a message from Heaven "… Killing in the sacred month is indeed a serious matter:  but it is more serious to keep people from following in the ways of God, …"  So, Muhammad vindicated the young men of Medina, although he distributed all their ill-gotten gains to the poor. (p 84)
       In another ruse, malcontent converts to Islam set up a kind of bandits' lair, preying on their own city's trading caravans, during a 10-year truce (p 130).
       Amazingly, the authoress seems to think that Muhammad was driven along such paths by a voice from Heaven. 
       The index does not show Hinduism in Arabia, although it almost certainly existed there.  The alleged treachery of the Jews / Judaists is detailed, but reading the whole book one can see this was the pot calling the kettle black.  He developed a hatred of the Jews (see the murders of at least 600 Qurayza Jews who had surrendered, p 122), and the Christians.
       Another example of betrayal is at the taking of Mecca.  He let it be known that only people who resisted were to be killed, but in reality Muhammad ordered the murders of his former secretary, plus an apostate who owned two clever dancing girls, and others.
       Elsewhere it has been written that the first and continuing victims of Islam are women.  Muhammad is quoted as saying: "You have rights over your wives, and they have rights over you … Beat them, but not with severity.  Lay injunctions on women kindly, for they are prisoners with you, having no control over their persons.  You have them only as a trust from God." (p 181)
       On page 111 we read that Heaven told him to say to wives: "Stay in your houses and do not go in public decked as in the days of your former idolatry, but observe prayer, and pay the poor-rate, and obey God and the Apostle." (p 111)
       Yet, still, some of the chattering classes in the 20th and 21st century insist on tolerance of other cultures that teach beating, discrimination, and lowering the status of women -- it is "multiculturalism"!  Westerners must be "inclusive"!
       When he gained ascendancy, prayer was planned for inconvenient times, interfering with daily work, and was made compulsory five times a day (p 74), people beating their heads on the ground in a way strangely undignified.
       (A CRITICISM: The book's typesetting does not have proper curly quotation marks, apostrophes, etc.  Neither does most of this website, but that is partly to avoid the laborious work of coding each such mark.  A book about Muhammad using Arabic words, however, needs the correct single quotation marks, which are used in transliteration of Arabic to roman letters to represent certain different sounds in the language.  That is, the 6-shaped or ‘ quotation mark represents ‘ain, and the the 9-shaped or ’ one represents alif, and has other functions too.)

       Chapter 30:  Is Radical Muslim Terrorism Non-Islamic?
       […] Certainly, radical Islam is not how the religion is practiced by the majority of Muslims, who are nonviolent. … the radicals … their message would not find the success it has were there not some supporting basis within Islam.  Three "supports" for their message are Kharijism, Wahhabism, and jihad.
       Two forms of Islam
       Kharijism was an early sect in Islam that fits quite well with modern radical Islam.  In early Islam, a civil war was fought over the "true" successor to Muhammad, a conflict that led to the division between the majority Sunni and minority Shiite branches of Islam.  A group later named the Kharijites ("withdrawers") believed that only God could determine the proper successor, and that He would let His will be known in battle.
       The Kharijites
    held that any person who strayed from the perfect practice of Islam was ipso facto an apostate and could be killed.  And they believed that only they had the true notion of what Islam required.  They had the true notion of what Islam required. [sic]  They applied their doctrine with a ferocity against both the developing Sunni and Shi’a traditions of Islam. …  Their tactics were frightfully violent, and it took centuries before they were put down. 172
       […] "Kharijite uprisings continued…in Iran, Iraq and Arabia;…Kharijism was suppressed in Iraq but continued to play an important political role in eastern Arabia, North Africa, and eastern Africa.  Kharijism survives today in these areas." 174
       The form of Islam called Wahhabism also lends itself to extremists like [Osama] bin Laden.  Muwahhidun, the term used by followers, was founded by Muhammad ibn ’Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) in Saudi Arabia, and is predicated on the Sunni teachings of Ibn Hanbal (780-855). […] Muwahhidun became in inspiration to other Islamic reform movements from India and Sumatra to North Africa and the Sudan. […]
       Wahhabism's ultimate purpose is to bring about a global revolution based on Wahhabi teachings, […]
       Because much other Islamic tradition also divides the world into two opposing camps, the dar al-Islam (the realm of Islam) and the dar al-harb (the realm of war), between which there is to be unending conflict, the radicals feel further justified in their point of view, and believe that Islam is destined for victory by Allah.
       […] But in spite of what moderates may believe, and even though the radicals do not completely represent true Islam today, they do have a basis in Islamic history for their beliefs.

       Ed Husain is the man we were all looking for after the 7/7 bombings in London two years ago. The Islamist, Ed HUSAIN; Penguin book Not to "help police with their investigations", as they still say during police manhunts, but to help a stunned nation understand what had happened to it. Like dozens of other reporters, I walked the streets of Leeds talking to the friends and families of three of the July 7 bombers in an unsuccessful attempt to understand how three boys born there and a fourth who had emigrated from Jamaica as a baby had turned into homegrown Islamic terrorists, young men capable of playing a friendly game of cricket one summer evening and then blowing up trains and buses jammed with their fellow Britons the next morning.
       Husain knows how that transformation happened because he has been through the same process of alienation, grooming and indoctrination. The East London-born son of Indian and Bangladeshi immigrants spent five years moving deeper and deeper into radical Islamist circles in London and has written a book explaining his time as an active player in the groups that he now believes prepare young Muslims to be potential terrorists.

       Lebanon used to be a rare democracy in a very dark Near East.  It had a Christian majority; Muslims and non-Muslims were said to live together in peace and calm, with the highest living standard in the area.

       But in 1975 radical Muslims from surrounding nations declared jihad on the Lebanese Christians, and poured into southern Lebanon to set up a Muslim state, and to impose sharia law.
       The author was a Maronite Christian girl, who was 10 years old when the rape of Lebanon began, and lived through the terror.
       In her book she says that the radical Muslims warned of what they were going to do, and they have also warned of what they intend to do to the Western nations, having declared a holy war against the West.
       The hatred and venom that Muslims have for Jews is discussed carefully.
       Muslim radicals set up rocket attacks from Christian areas, then quickly pull out, leaving the Israeli reprisals to fall on the Christians.
       The Arabic terms relating to the propaganda that the radical Muslims use are taqiyya (deception) and kitman (secrecy).
       The author states that the Islamic obligation to impose its rule on the world are at the heart of mainstream Islam.  We must reject the myth of moderate Islam.

       The Babylonian Talmud takes precedence, in Judaist teaching, over the Jerusalem Talmud and over the Torah and the Old Testament generally.
       "… the Babylonian Gemara … Talmud.  Its birthplace, Babylonia, was an autonomous Jewish centre for a longer period than any other land; namely, from soon after 586 before the Christian era to the year 1040 after the Christian era — 1626 years; from the days of Cyrus down to the age of the Mongol conquerors!" (Exh 34, p 154)
       The photostats show that "… with the destruction of the Temple … Henceforth Jewish life was regulated by the teachings of the Pharisees; … Pharisaism shaped the character of Judaism and the life and thought of the Jew for all the future."        Much of the Talmud seems to be an explanation of how to find scripture quotes to evade and even contradict the main commandments of the Hebrew scripture.  Examples follow:
       "On the eve of the Passover, Yeshu was hanged. … Was he not a Mesith (enticer), concerning whom Scripture says, Neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him? (Sanhedrin 43 a, Soncino Talmud pages 281-2; Exh 46-47, p 160.)
       "Pederasty with a child below nine years of age is not deemed as pederasty with a child above that, Samuel said:  Pederasty with a child below three years is not treated as with a child above that." (Sanhedrin 54b, page 371; Exh 54, p 164)
       "For murder, whether of a Cuthean by a Cuthean, or of an Israelite by a Cuthean, punishment is incurred; but of a Cuthean by an Israelite, there is no death penalty'?" ("Sanhedrin," 57a, page 388; Exh 57, p 165)
       "Raba said:  If one bound his neighbour and he died of starvation, he is not liable to execution. … Raba also said:  If he bound him before a lion, he is not liable, … (Sanhedrin, 77a, page 520; Exh 85, p 179)
       Advice is given not to trust non-Judaist wet nurses or surgeons. (p 58)
       She also provides evidence that Judaists are members of a cultural group, not a race, with pictures of Jews of black African and Chinese appearance. (pp 34-35)  Photostats of 20th-century newsitems demonstrate the continuity of the philosophy, and help identify the people of interest. (see pp 65-82)
       During a 1931 family trip to Communist Russia, the author had seen the "open virulent anti-Christ campaign everywhere." (p 5)  Dilling discusses links between the Soviet Russian leadership and methods, and a variety of writings.

It must be recognised that neither every Muslim, nor every Muslim nation follows all of these teachings. These teachings come from both the Qur'an and the Hadith. The Hadith is 'The Tradition of Muhammad'; that is, the stories of Muhammad's deeds and sayings. (Page 1) […]
       (pp 13-15) The Qur'an states:
    Righteous women are therefore obedient, … And those you fear may be rebellious, (nushuz) admonish, banish them to their couches, and beat them. 57
       … Pickthall and Rodwell translate the word 'edrebouhon _ beat them' as 'scourge them'. […]
       So the man has the right to beat his rebellious wife as long as that beating is not like the whipping of the slave and will not result in injury.
       The translator of Mishkat Al-Masabih wrote in a footnote of Fatwa by Qazi Khan that said beating the wife mildly is:
    allowed in four cases (1) When she does not wear fineries though wanted by the husband, (2) When she is called for sexual intercourse and she refuses without any lawful excuse, (3) When she is ordered to take a bath [to clean herself] from impurities for prayer and she refuses and (4) When she goes abroad without permission of her husband.
       In another footnote the translator of Mishkat Al-Masabih said,
    No wife shall refuse her husband what he wants from her except on religious grounds i.e. at the time of menstrual flow or fasting.  Some theologians regard this refusal as unlawful as the husband may get enjoyment from his wife in other ways, by embracing, kissing etc.  The duty of the wife is to give him comforts in his bed whenever he wants her.
       This beating is the husband's unquestionable right.
       Ibn Kathir, in his commentary, mentioned a Hadith on the authority of zal Ash'ath Ibn al-Qays who was visiting 'Omar and at that time.  'Omar took his wife and beat her, then said to Ash'ath:
    Memorise three things from me, which I memorised from the prophet who said:  The man is not to be asked why he beat his wife …'
       Man's right to 'beat his wife' does not belong to the distant past.  The Guardian Weekly reported:
    In 1987 an Egyptian court, following an interpretation of the Koran proposed by the Syndicate of Arab Lawyers, ruled that a husband had the duty to educate his wife and therefore the right to punish her as he wished. 65
       Sayyed Qotb, a modern scholar and commentator, tries to justify the provision for a man to beat his wife, found in the above Qur'anic verse:
    The facts of life, and the psychological observations of certain forms of deviations indicate that this approach (beating the wife) is the most appropriate one to satisfy a particular form of deviation, reforming the behavior of the person … and gratifying her … at the same time!  Even without the existence of this form of psychological deviation, perhaps some women will not recognise the power of the man whom they love to have as their guardian and husband, except when the man conquers them physically!  This is not the nature of every woman.  But this kind does exist.  And it is this kind that needs this last treatment to be set straight, and remain within the serious organisation [marriage] in peace and tranquillity.

       This tells the story of Mende, enslaved at the age of 12 by Arab-language raiders in Sudan, and abused for years in Khartoum (capital city) and later in London, before becoming free. The raiders who attacked her little town operated under the protection of the Sudan military. After cutting off the heads of the adults in her village with knives, the raiders gathered and began to chant, "Allahu Akhbar!  Allahu Akhbar!  Allahu Akhbar! -- God is Great! God is Great! God is Great!" (p. 95).
       The book review quotes two scriptures supporting slavery, discussing enslaved females as "lawful for" or "lawful to" them:

       [COMMENT: There is no quotation of, let alone discussion of, the old texts -- Koran and Hadith -- which are used by people giving supposed "reasons" for violence, murder, open insurrection, forced marriages, clothing restrictions, imposition of shariah law, and animal death brutality. For the subjugatory Pact of Umar and the Shariah as well, try reading Patrick Sookhdeo's 2002 book A People Betrayed and Irshad Manji's 2003 book The Trouble with Islam.
       The semi-slave condition of women and the supremacism of men in Muslim lands was clearly brought to the attention of the West (again) by Betty Mahmoody's story in the 1987 book Not without my daughter, and the subsequent film around 1990-91.
       Periodicals: In addition, an RC group publishes Aid to the Church in Need Mirror www.aidto church.org regularly about persecutions by Communists, Muslims, and Hindu extremists. Another Christian group issues The Voice of the Martyrs www.vom. com.au monthly, with similar articles of horror and degradation.
       Go back in history: 7th century -- Islam's supremacist policies at its beginning gradually became known to Europeans because of the massacres, invasions and occupations of the lands occupied by various cultures, including Christians and Jews, in Arabia, and then the wars to seize the Christian heartlands of the Near East by Arab Muslims from AD 633 onwards. "Islam or the sword" was used by some of the Arab invaders. Invasions and attacks reaching as far as France in the west, Austria in central Europe, and Persia and India, kept many warriors busy. (At various times Europe had been also attacked from the north by Vikings, and from the east by various forces.)
       12th C: It was not until 1143 AD that the Koran was translated into Latin.
       "Pagans": A year after the Muslims captured the Christian city of Edessa, on December 1, 1145, Pope Eugene III, inviting Christian leaders to re-take the Near East from the Muslims, described previous expeditions as having freed "from the filth of the pagans that city where our Saviour willed to suffer for us, …" -- The Papal Encyclicals in their historical context, 1956, Anne Fremantle, Mentor Books, New York, page 67.
       13th C: Thomas Aquinas (1225-74) wrote Summa Contra Gentiles to turn back the doctrines that had been taught by the Muslim Averroes in Spain and other areas. In later centuries the attacks of the Muslim Ottoman Turks were so prolonged that the word "Turk" became a general term used in discussing Muslim dangers to Europe, as can be seen if referring to the writings of people of those times.
       15th C: The Muslim Turks, with a Venetian cannon-maker's aid, on a Tuesday in 1453 overthrew the Christian Eastern Roman Empire in Asia Minor. Other attacks occurred. The fear of the Turks by educated Europeans can be noted in the writings of people such as Dr Martin Luther (1483-1546) and his contemporaries.
       17th - 20th C: English translations: The Koran was translated into French by André du Ryer, and from that in 1649 into English by Alexander Ross. The first direct translation into English from the Arabic was by Sale in 1734, and others include Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Bell 1937-39, and Arberry 1955. (See Alan Jones's 1994 introduction to J.M.Rodwell's translation, page xxvi)
       Therefore, it is surprising that Mr Gray writes as if he had no notion of such literature and statements by the Roman Catholic Church, and more amazing that his book is being fostered by Christian groups who ought to know how shallow it is, or could easily find out by looking in a good encyclopaedia and on the Internet.        This is the true (the book says), first-hand account of one woman's courageous struggle for justice, and the story that in 2001 made the eyes of the world turn to the small Nigerian village of Tungar Tudu.
       Safiya Hussaini was accused of adultery, arrested and taken from her farming village in northern Nigeria. Brought before a Sharia court, she was sentenced to death by stoning. Her crime was to become pregnant outside of marriage; she had given birth to a little girl, Adama. (She had other prior children by her previous marriages.)
       The child's father had promised marriage, she says, but had never come to the village to see her father and make the arrangments. The child's father at first accepted responsibility, but then changed his story, denied everything and was released without penalty.
       She was sentenced to death by stoning. She ran away into countryside, then turned back to seek help from her uncle. Supported by her parents and cousins and her faith in Allah, she was determined to stay alive to care for her new little girl.
       Her brother had betrayed her to the sharia people, but he later repented. Her extended family hired a lawyer, Abdulkadir Imam Ibrahim. Then someone got the facts about the death sentence to the world's news media. The BBC interviewed her. The lawyer showed her newspapers from various countries. She writes: "I didn't think anyone would be concerned enough about my ordeal to write about it in the newspapers. … Those strangers from so far away knew who I was and wanted me to live."
       Reporters from around the world attended the appeal at the sharia court. Her lawyer made a speech quoting from the Koran and other Muslim and Nigerian writings. He had found a Koran sura (verse) that the male semen could remain dormant in the womb for up to three years. She had been divorced three years.
       She was declared not guilty. Raffaelo Masto, an Italian journalist (of Radio Popolare from 1989), helped her a lot, and co-authored the book.
       An Italian association that had campaigned for her to be freed from the stoning sentence organised a trip to Rome for her, where in 2002 she was declared an honorary citizen of the Commune of Rome. She lives in the village, having remarried, and is carefully using the money she received from news and other organisations for her husband and children.

       Pages 149-159 lists some of the contradictory teachings and commands in the Koran and the Hadith.
       The footnote of Professor Longva's paper about "universal human rights and citizenship" shows the myopia of someone who doesn't seem to realise that human rights are concepts with some force for less than 25 per cent of the world's people, and are retreating. The author in 2003 could not have known that three of the few democracies in the world were unravelling 800 years of the freedom fight. The three Western nations invading Iraq in 2003 removed the rights to freedom from their own citizens as well as from outsiders under so-called "anti-terrorist laws". The last of these to throw away Magna Carta and Habeas Corpus was Australia, where in November-December 2005 it became an offence for anyone to tell anyone that a loved one had been "detained" without charge or trial under these evil laws. Even children can be detained. A person who is NOT suspected of planning terrorist acts or to have done them can be detained if an official decides they might know something about such. This means nearly everyone, even those reading this commentary! This will impinge on the classical freedoms of the Anglo-Celtic peoples, and muzzle Free Speech and Freedom of the Press.       Land of the pure     IN its literal Persian translation Pakistan means 'Land of the Pure'. When Pakistan was created in 1947 there were high hopes for this new nation as there was a clean slate to start from. It was the first nation in modern times to be formed on the basis of religion, but it was founded with a solidly secular, western style, constitution.
    Pakistan was not a nation that seemed susceptible to the pressure of Islamic fundamentalism.
       However, as years passed it has become increasingly clear that there has been a process of creeping Islamization. This ostensibly secular state now has a mandatory death sentence for crimes 'defiling the name of the Prophet Mohammed'. A state formed with the intention of protecting religious minorities from persecution has seen the persecution of its own minorities gradually increase to the point where the Christian community is under great pressure.

       BRITAIN / PAKISTAN: This book details the discriminatory clauses of Islamic religious teaching in relation to "conquered peoples" and other subjugated classifications and how Pakistan which had a theoretically fair constitution has been changing more and more to the fundamentals of the old Muslim traditions, that is, to give non-Muslims very few rights.
       The changeover from the colonial to the Islamic system was resisted for years by elected parliamentarians, sometimes by delaying tactics, but one of the military dictators pushed hard to bring in Shariah law. Pakistan now has such unjust laws and practices as, if a Christian woman converts to Islam her marriage to a Christian is dissolved (page 206). There have been cases of abduction and enforced conversion and marriage to a Muslim, with the pretence it was all voluntary.
       With practices such as two male witnesses, or one male and two female, can prove a case, but four female witnesses cannot, and non-Muslims are also not counted as complete persons, it is easy to see how people of other faiths, and fair-minded Muslims, oppose the moves to introduce Shariah law.
       Urdu-medium Christian schools were "nationalised" beginning in October 1972 (p 224), and no compensation was paid, though the title deeds remained in the former hands. Islamisation began in 1979. No non-Muslim at such schools could study his/her own religion at school, but all had to learn Islam (Islamiyat) (p 225).
       Qazi Hussein Ahmadsaid raised a public storm when he said on 9 December 1990 that Christians cannot be the friends of Muslims (p 228). (This is in line with several āyas, i.e. verses, in the Koran.)
       One way that militant Muslims can cause the death of Christians and others is to denounce them to the police or to violent mobs for blasphemy, which under Islamic law attracts the death penalty.
       This, and the death penalty for apostasy, that is, changing to another religion, are dealt with in chapter 5.  To object, or for the world news media to publicise such cases, stirred up the more militant Muslims, who then take direct action.  The Tahir Iqbal case (died in prison mysteriously on 19-20 July 1992) is described.

       The second group demonstrates the Muslim leaning towards "predestination."  If you read that section in the book, you will see part of it is a teaching to get Muslims and others to think about the "19 keepers" and whether they are angels or not, and about "the Fire".  None of those who think or write about such things has ever seen the "19 keepers" or "the Fire", so such discussions only serve to fritter away brain-time.
       So, those who recite this material have their minds being warped towards violence and/or fatalism, that is, tossing up about fundamentalist actions leading to an invisible Paradise, and/or allowing themselves to sink into lethargy with the belief that everything is all decided in advance by an invisible force, and anyway the unproved life after death will be better than life on earth.         Corgi Books, Moorebank (Australia), London and Auckland. Betty Mahmoody, a US citizen, had married an Iranian doctor in the USA. Her husband Moody's cousin had proposed that they and their daughter Mahtob go for a trip to Iran. Once there Moody's polite manners disappeared, and he told her that she would never leave Iran. This book is the story of how eventually, with the help of sympathetic Iranian citizens, the mother and daughter escaped from Iran.
       The book reveals the dictatorial attitude of males of that culture. On another subject, one telling sentence from page 418 is: "The furor in the U.S. over the arms shipments was a great surprise … in Iran … it has been common knowledge that the U.S. aids both sides in the extended war between Iran and Iraq."        The nature of terrorism is sometimes misunderstood because a terrorist group will often start out having a specific enemy.  On October 12, 1984, the Irish Republican Army nearly succeeded in destroying the British Government by means of a time-delay bomb planted in a Brighton hotel where Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet were staying.
       But the IRA is killing passersby of any nationality in London. The IRA's weapons are bought with money from U.S. citizens of Irish ancestry, mingled with funds that are Soviet-controlled such as Libya's.  Isn't it strange that the IRA is linked with Arab, German, French, Italian and Japanese terrorist groups?  Terrorist communiques are basically irrelevant to their acts.        Do Jewish (Judaist) citizens of the modern country of Israel have a racial connection with the ancient country of Israel, in Palestine, south-west Asia?  Were their ancestors ancient Israelites or Judahites?
       Author Arthur Koestler writes that the racial and historical links are largely an illusion, because most of their ancestry derives not from the Semites of south-west Asia, but rather from a Turkic people in Europe, the Khazars (Chazars), who lived north of the Black and Caspian Seas, and eastwards to the Caucasus Mountains. (see pages 223-6)
       This book traces the history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe, which in the Dark Ages became converted to Judaism.  Khazaria was finally wiped out by the forces of Genghis Khan (a Mongol conqueror), but evidence indicates that the Khazars themselves gradually migrated to Poland and formed the cradle of Western Jewry…
       To the general reader the Khazars, who flourished from the seventh to the eleventh century of the Common Era (i.e., after Christ), may seem infinitely remote today.  Yet they have a close and unexpected bearing on our world which emerges as Mr. Koestler recounts the fascinating history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe at about the time that Charlemagne was Emperor in the West.  The Khazars' sway extended from the Black Sea to the Caspian, from the Caucasus to the Volga, and they were instrumental in stopping the Muslim onslaught against Byzantium, the eastern jaw of the gigantic pincer movement that in the West swept across northern Africa and into Spain.        Between Christians and Muslims, they chose Judaism: Thereafter the Khazars found themselves in a precarious position between the two major world powers:  the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople / Byzantium (Orthodox Christians) and the triumphant followers of Mohammed (Muslims).  As Mr. Koestler points out, the Khazars were the Third World of their day, and they chose a surprising method of resisting both the Western pressure to become Christian and the Eastern to adopt Islam.  Rejecting both, they converted to Judaism.
       In the second part of this book, "The Heritage," Mr. Koestler speculates about the ultimate faith of the Khazars and their impact on the racial composition and social heritage of modern Jewry. He produces a large body of meticulously detailed research in support of a theory that sounds all the more convincing for the restraint with which it is advanced.  Yet should this theory be confirmed, the term "anti-Semitism" would become void of meaning, since, as Mr. Koestler writes, it is based "on a misapprehension shared by both the killers and their victims.  The story of the Khazar Empire, as it slowly emerges from the past, begins to look like the most cruel hoax which history has ever perpetrated."        The Khazars used to impose a 10 per cent tax on the Rus (otherwise identified with Varangians, as Vikings were called in that region) trading and raiding ships that sailed on the rivers through their territory (adapted from pp 92 and 112).  [This 10% tax looks suspiciously like a "toll" imposed by force, akin to pirate threats of those time and of the later Barbary Coast Muslim regimes in north Africa.]
       Stopped Islam jihadists in 732 A.D., and imperial marriage to an Orthodox Christian prince: It is perhaps not surprising ... that in 732 -- after a resounding Khazar victory over the Arabs -- the future Emperor Constantine V married a Khazar princess.  In due course their son became the Emperor Leo IV, known as Leo the Khazar. (p 14)
       Persecutions during the Crusades, 1096 A.D.: Before the Western "Christian" warriors of the First Crusade, AD 1096, left the Franco-German areas of Europe to free Jerusalem, mob hysteria led to great slaughters of the Judaists (Jews) (see pp 162-3).  At one stage some Jews were given shelter in the fortified castle of the Bishop of Burgrave (pp 164-5).
       A typical episode: During the second crusade the survivors of the Jews of Mayence found refuge in Spires, later returning to their native city and building a replacement synagogue (place of worship) (see p 165).
       1306 A.D. property seized, expelled: Philip le Bel, a "Christian" ruler in Western Europe, levied heavy taxes on the Jews for some years, then secretly ordered that all their possessions be seized and they be expelled.  On July 22, 1306, the Jews of his domains were all arrested, and expelled a few weeks later, mainly going to Provence, Burgundy, Aquitaine, and a few other feudal fiefs (see p 166).  The Black Death, caused by microscopic organisms spread by rat fleas, was another heavy blow for Judaists, who were accused of poisoning the wells, and Jewish survivors of the Black Death were murdered in batches. (see p 167).
       We may safely conclude that the traditional idea of a mass-exodus of Western Jewry from the Rhineland to Poland all across Germany … is historically untenable (p 168).
       Language: According to the first all-Russian census in 1897, there were 12 894 Karaite Jews living in the Tsarist Empire (which included Poland).  Of these 9666 gave Turkish as their mother tongue (i.e., presumably their original Khazar dialect), 2632 spoke Russian, and only 383 spoke Yiddish (pp 176-7).
       Israel 's right to exist: The State of Israel's right to exist is based on international law, based on the decision of the United Nations in 1947 to partition Palestine.  The partition decision was based on a century of peaceful immigration and pioneering effort, he wrote (p 223).  The right of the State of Israel to exist is not based on the supposed origins of the ancient Israelites and Judahites, nor on the myth that Abraham had a covenant with their god, he wrote.
